Robert Plant (60 years old) and Krauss (27 years old) won five Grammys in 2009, the most important was for the category best album. Besides the joint album “Raising Sand” the single “Please Read The Letter” was nominated as the best recording as well. Plant commented on this triumph laconically as usual: “One has used to call it sellout, but hey, it´s not the worst way to spend one´s Sunday.”
There´s no doubt: Robert Plant is a real Rock legend. The fascinating history of the super giants Led Zeppelin wouldn´t have taken place without him, it possibly was the most important part of his life as a musician. But in his biography it´s just an episode of about 12 years which ended with the tragic and early death of drummer John “Bonzo” Bonham in 1980. After that, Robert Plant went on working continuously and released numerous solo albums, partly recorded together with Jimmy Page, the ingenious guitarist of Led Zeppelin.
His comprehensive Rock biography about Robert Plant illustrates all five decades of his creative work. The book begins with his childhood and tells about his early passion for Southern Blues and classic R&B of the fifties which lasts until today. The author reveals that Robert Plants musical work is based on the heritage of Led Zeppelin, but at the same time it is associated with a broad historical context with a lot of influences of modern music. The author illustrates this special curriculum vitae with all its highs and lows ending with Robert Plant´s current project Raising Sand with Bluegrass singer Alison Krauss, which won 5 Grammys in 2009 and with the sensational Led Zeppelin comeback in December 2007.
Exclusive interviews with a lot of his companions of his childhood, with colleagues, producers and artists tell the career of a lifelong music-maniac from Birmingham that became a real superstar and an icon of Rock.
The author:
Neil Daniels already wrote about Classic Rock and Heavy Metal for numerous magazines and fanzines. Currently he is working for Fireworks, Powerplay and GetReadyToRock.com. Additionally he writes for Rock Sound and Record Collector from time to time. His articles and reviews can also be read in The Guardian, Big Cheese, DrownedInSound.com, Carling.com, Unbarred.co.uk and Planet Sound on Channel4 teletext. As a book author he wrote the biography of Judas Priest and an encyclopaedia about Bon Jovi. As a co-author he composed the auto-biography “Dawn Of The Metal Gods” of ex-Judas Priest singer Al Atkins.

Right on time for the 20th anniversary of the Wacken Open Air we are happy to present a joyful event to you: “Wacken Roll – The biggest Heavy Metal festival in the world”, a book by Andreas Schöwe! The book (ISBN 978-3-85445-304-8, Hannibal Verlag, 224 pages, with more than 100 pictures) is available for 14,95 Euros from now on at Metaltix.
About the book:
Loud, but peaceful: Every summer the biggest Heavy Metal festival in the world takes place in the small village called Wacken in northern Germany. At that time two worlds collide, which couldn’t be more different: On the one hand a contemplative, peaceful village. On the other hand a Heavy-Metal fan-community from all around the world, which meets right there in order to celebrate an extreme loud but constantly peaceful festival for a few days and to listen to the sonic thunderstorms of the hottest Metal-bands.
In that book the author portrays this event from all perspectives and collects a lot of funny, partly bizarre stories around the Wacken Open Air. In numerous interviews the organizers, the inhabitants, the police, the fire fighters, the regulatory agency, the mayor and on top of that a lot of musicians like the Scorpions, Doro, U.D.O., Iron Maiden, Stratovarius, Stephan Weidner or Exodus are getting a word..., - and above all the fans too.
Together they ensure an unforgettable experience. Wacken Roll!
The author:
Andreas Schöwe writes for the METAL HAMMER magazine since 1990 and since two decades he passes for one of the most well-known journalists in that genre. As an insider of the Rock scene he already portrayed stars like Metallica, Guns N’Roses, Aerosmith, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Mötley Crüe, AC/DC or the Scorpions. The book “All Access/All Excess – Rock Stars unzensiert“ (2006)” was his last release, currently he also writes for the “Rock It!” magazine.
A comment from Holger Hübner (W:O:A organizer) about the book “Wacken Roll”, written by Andreas Schöwe:
“We have gladly supported this book for the 20th anniversary: The author Andreas Schöwe is a well-known journalist in the Metal scene for about 20 years and he knows what he is writing about, also because he is a visitor of the Wacken Open Air for many years now. Another nice fact about that book is that each participating party gets a word, from the inhabitants, the mayor and the firedepartment to us, the organizers, and to the 24 bands, that report exemplarily about their experiences at Wacken. And last but not least the fans, that got their own chapter with a lot of space for their experiences and opinions. We´re amazed how the Wacken Open Air has grown over the years. The author was able to document the whole story, from the beginning in 1990 until today, with all the highs and lows, in an impressive and exciting way!”

Smashed
guitars, exasperated musicians, betrayed wives and a helpless management – the
“master of the wild guitar-dance” lives his life just like he plays his guitar:
With no compromises.
At the
beginning of his career, Ritchie Blackmore spent much of his time with
chatoyant characters like Screaming Lord Sutch, Joe Meek and Jerry Lewis, but
then he became a hard rock legend himself, and at the same time one of the most
capricious, most difficult and most puzzling characters of the Rock`n`Roll
scene. The “man in black” was the musical head of DEEP PURPLE, celebrated as
the “most fascinating live-guitarist since Hendrix”. His guitar part in the
megahit “Black Night” has long ago become a hymn, and “Smoke On The Water”
probably is the best-known guitar riff in the world of Rock’n’Roll of all time.
From melodic Hard Rock, for which he set standards with his band RAINBOW, he
has now turned towards the music of the middle ages, and inspires his audience
worldwide in concert halls, chateaus and castles all around the world with
BLACKMORE’S NIGHT.
This book is the first
biography of the guitarist, whose ambivalent character within has given him
unlimited admiration as well as rancorous antagonsism in an eventful life.

KEN HENSLEY - "Blood On The Highway – When Too Many Dreams Come True" |
|
|
Title: "Blood On The Highway – When Too Many Dreams Come True"
Author: Matthias Penzel / Ken Hensley
Release Date: July 27th, 2007
Publisher: Grosser & Stein
Language: English
„This is not a ‚sex, drugs & rock`n`roll’“
book!!“ are the opening words of Ken Hensley to his autobiography „Blood On The
Highway - When too many dreams com
true“ – and points out that all three topics play an important role in the
second sentence. After all, Hensley was the frontman of Uriah Heep for eleven
years, one of the bands that was co-founder of Hard Rock. The life story of the
61-year-old is 195 pages long and is now being released via Membran.
From 1969 to 1980, Hensley was guitarist,
singer and keyboarder of Uriah Heep, since then he has been a successful solo
artist. His retrospect to life is at the same time a piece of contemporary
history on the rock and music business, which he comments in a critical and
ironic kind of way. You get to know everything on his wild life as a rockstar,
concerts, high CD-selling-numbers, voyages, parties, his first Rolls-Royce, the
first car race in which he partook (he ended last), his womanizing and drugs.
On the other hand there is his private life, because an autobiography could not
be an autobiography without childhood- and boyhood-memories: Hensley talks
about his family, his schooldays and his faible for sports – he was captain of
the Under-16-cricket-team! – and his “nearly-amateur-soccer-career”.
But his dream to become Elvis grew bigger: Hensley became a rock musician
– a one who is known everywhere on the planet! But he also talks about the
other side of the coin in a critical and ironic way: Refined, he talks about
friends and colleagues who took the “intoxicating” life a little too seriously
and died due to drug overdoses. Losses like these, failed relationships and the
turning away from Uriah Heep let Hensley think about his life once again. A
life full of contrasts, the story of a person who is constantly searching,
without knowing what for, who, in the end, finds his very personal way: After a
heart attack, Hensley turns towards Christianity, and realizes that he has
received a second chance. At the end of the 90es, he finally gets to know his
big love, Monica, who supports his new way. A dream came true!
The autobiography will be released in English
and contains many many pictures. An extensive discography and a detailed list
of all mentioned musicians, like his rock-colleagues Cinderella, The Dogs,
W.A.S.P. and Blackfoot complete Hensley’s life story. A must for every
Hard-Rock-Fan!
